I use this to chat with friends and family all over the world. Its easy and free! I also ported my number into google voice so that I can always get calls there regardless of my cell carrier.

Layout is great and fast easy communication, only problem is swiping down from a notification to reply; sometimes the messages wont really send until you open the actual app and go into the conversation. Overall great app!

...on an iPad Mini, its easy to miss incoming Google Voice calls. Mess it up or got dry-finger and theres no recourse; no other way to answer the call! Happens a lot. This app. still has many of the previous releases rough edges. My wife and I have used Hangouts on our iPad Minis (and PCs) since they first released the software. It still regularly dumps voice calls directly into voicemail instead of ringing through - even when excellent WiFi and LTE signals are available. (And yup, weve got Notifications configured correctly... Im a computer troubleshooter) Theres only one ringtone and even with volume at maximum, its only loud enough to hear when in a fairly quiet environment, (especially when the tablet is in my rear pocket or in her purse). On the plus side, weve found that generally call quality is good and volume of voices is usually fairly good too, with or without using a bluetooth earpiece (and even in a moving vehicle). But, as with many communication apps, it tries to be too many things to too many people, making the interface a lot less intuitive than it could be. Small icons and word-links are everywhere, making it easy to accidentally tap something and get an unexpected result. Text messaging is fine, but we prefer iMessage. Video calls are OK too, but FaceTime still has higher quality video and better lip-sync, (even after the new peer-to-peer feature was supposed to improve audio and video call quality.) A major bug in the last few versions: If someone calls (regular voice call), you dont answer it and they dont leave a voicemail, there will be no record of the call, within the app. What? As usual, my wife complained that she couldnt pick up a call fast enough by the time she finally heard it (with that quiet ringer, we could certainly use a few more rings before dumping into voicemail). Then, she couldnt even find out who had just called! At first I thought maybe she wasnt looking in the right place, but quickly found out that she was right. This app is still a work in-progress.

I love hangouts and Im glad that now you can share things from other apps and sites. But I really wish it had the capability to be used on the side bar with the iPad. Other messaging apps are available there. If that was added Id be totally satisfied! :)

Update May-16: After using it for months, I have to say its better than Google voice app. But there are still some features in Google voice that I cant do in Hangouts, ie text search. It works better than Google voice since it has a better UI, and easier to manage all the chat rooms.

Works great with Google voice I forward all my calls, text messages and voicemails to Hangouts app. I can easily call any phone number.

so apparently the latest version caused me to not be able to log in period , all it keep saying is " Network Unavailable " and it is really pissing me off . can you please fix this bug .

My favorite communication tool

I dont know what Im doing wrong; Google Hangouts works flawlessly except that I cant receive calls on this version of the app. Otherwise it would be a 5 star app.

Great app: use it mainly for telephone calls, since I am Verizon I cant have data and voice same time. Features: Speaker phone toggle: have a toggle to turn on or off the speakerphone. Not a toggle to choose from the iPhone headset to speakerphone its redundant. Call log info: it will be nice to log my calls onto my Google calendar or to take notes from a call and send it to Evernote. Or some type of GTD app. Thanks

This is an amazing app. I have an iPod so I normally cant call anyone. But now I can and that helps a lot! Love love it

The only reason this product exists is because its the kind of garbage your average moron gets excited about. Just look at the looks on the faces of the people in the main App Store page for this app. Theyre actually excited to use this crap because theyre not capable of getting excited about things that are truly interesting. They cant even wrap their tiny minds around that kind of stuff. Yeah Im talking down to you. You probably waste your time on google plus too, you scum.

This app is perfect for me and my friends and I love how you can do both computer and mobile!! You should download if interested!

When it works, it works beautifully. But half of the time, a call made to my Google Voice number comes through on my regular line on my cell, and goes to my carrier voicemail, negating the voicemail integration, thus making it very difficult to keep a personal number and business number separated.
